Burnaby pizza wars heat up with new gourmet sourdough restaurant

You can do traditional or unusual ingredients like roasted pears.

Wild Flour Pizza has opened its doors at the corner of Lougheed Highway and Bainbridge, serving up “made from scratch” pizza cooked in a real fire oven.

If North Burnaby is known for any one type of food, it’s probably Italian, as Hastings Street in the Heights is filled with eateries and delis that serve pasta, pizza and more.

The area is loaded with such pizza heavyweights as Stan’s and Sopra Sotto. But for residents in North Burnaby who live farther away from Hastings, they now have a new entrant that offers a wide array of fun and fascinating choices.

Wild Flour Pizza has opened its doors at the corner of Lougheed Highway and Bainbridge, serving up “made from scratch” pizza cooked in a real fire oven.

“Wild Flour Pizza Co hopes to transform humble ingredients into fun and delicious pizzas,” reads a post on the website.

Ingredients like crispy prosciutto, roasted pears, chorizo fior di latte and roasted potatoes. Pizzas with traditional tomato sauce, but also one with a butter masala sauce or a white sauce.

And you can get it with a sourdough crust. There are also vegan options that include a house-made cashew mozzarella.

Wild Flour says it’s all the brainchild of Chef Steven Che and business partner and co-owner Clay Spalding, who was an integral part of how this concept came to fruition.

Based on what I've seen, it's a welcome relief from chain pizza joints with canned sauce and piles of greasy cheese.
