The Burnaby RCMP's victim services unit will be at Metrotown mall this week to connect people impacted by intimate partner violence with resources that can help and empower them.
Every year, the victim services unit helps support hundreds of victims of intimate partner violence, including domestic disputes, assaults and criminal harassment, according to a Burnaby RCMP news release.
Among the 508 intimate partner violence files it worked on in 2023, the unit also noted a rise in stalking, harassment and threats to release intimate images, the detachment said.
Burnaby RCMP described intimate partner violence as "a pattern of controlling behaviours used to maintain power in a relationship by one partner over the other."
"While each case is unique, abusers use a range of abusive behaviours to control their partners, including physical, psychological, sexual, financial and spiritual abuse," stated the release.
On Wednesday (April 17), the victim services unit will be set up in the Grand Court (near Uniqlo) in Metropolis at Metrotown between noon and 4 p.m. with information and resources to help victims of such abuse.
"Intimate partner violence has a huge impact on victims and communities," Burnaby RCMP's victim services coordinator Michelle Callander said in the release. "We want people to know there are resources and supports available."
