Site preparation is set to begin for a new public washroom facility near Whistler’s Gateway Loop.

Construction on the new building will begin in April, with the washrooms expected to open to the public for winter 2021.

“Visitor feedback consistently highlights the need for more public washrooms that are easy to find and accessible,” said Mayor Jack Crompton, in a release.

“The Village entrance washroom facility is part of a multi-year strategy to meet this demand for more public washrooms. The facility will be accessible and include gender neutral facilities—helping ensure Whistler is safe and welcoming for all visitors.”

The washroom facility is one of three being built in and around Whistler Village—all being paid for with provincial Resort Municipality Initiative funds.

New washrooms at the Lost Lake PassiveHaus opened to the public on Dec. 24, while the washrooms at Olympic Plaza are scheduled for a May opening.

The project at the Gateway Loop has an approved budget of $1.74 million.

While some trees will need to be removed, “the construction site will have a limited footprint to respect impact to the surrounding area,” according to the Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW).

The RMOW is also exploring an additional commercial-grade washroom facility for the Day Lots, to be built in 2022.
