Environment Canada said an 'intense' winter storm will make its way though the Sea to Sky this weekend.

Environment Canada has issued a winter storm alert for the Sea to Sky, with plenty of snow in the forecast this weekend.

The agency said an “intense winter storm” will move across the B.C. coast and “bring heavy snow to parts of the region beginning Saturday morning.” The snow is expected to persist over inland sections through the weekend, with accumulation of between 25 and 45 centimetres predicted.

Areas closer to the coast, such as Squamish, will likely see snow transition into rain, before mixing with wet snow as freezing levels rise on Sunday, the alert went on. Depending on the timing of that transition, snowfall accumulations of between 25 and 35 cm can be expected.

Precipitation is likely to ease up overnight on Sunday as the storm system continues its move southeast before exiting the region.

Travel is expected to be hazardous due to reduced visibility in some locations.
