The Pemberton Arts Council (PAC) is inviting residents to help create a mosaic mural for the small shed beside the skatepark.
The project will begin with a single large image—"a tree, a bird, a heart or something else that represents [the] community.” That image will be divided into smaller tiles, with each tile acting as a mini canvas. Each participant will receive a colour guide for their piece, which will later be assembled into a single mural.
“This is a chance for everyone in the community to contribute to a giant artwork that will brighten our town for years to come,” the PAC wrote on its website.
Community members are asked to help select the final image. Feedback on the design and colour scheme can be submitted in a SurveyMonkey poll running until Sept. 10.
This fall, once the design has been chosen, the PAC will host painting days for participating residents. Dates and locations for those sessions will be announced in the coming weeks.
The community mosaic is part of a larger public art initiative led by the PAC. Its Outside Voices Program aims to put Pemberton's blank walls to good use with "awe-inspiring, cause-driven mural designs that reflect the heart and soul of the community."
This year, as part of Outside Voices, the Youth Mural Camp created a complementary wrap-around design for last year's project, Mélisse Carron decked out the side of the Pemberton Valley Dyking District utility shed with a pointillist design, and local artist Natasha Louise was selected for a massive mural on the wall of the Pemberton Valley Supermarket.
