Police warn locals of ticketing scams after fraudsters target Whistler Library events

Events hosted at the Whistler Public Library are free

Scammers have reportedly been using event management websites to sell fake tickets to free Whistler Public Library events, police say.

A string of recent ticketing scams prompted police on Wednesday to remind the community that all Whistler Public Library events are indeed free.

According to a release, Sea to Sky RCMP received a report on Dec. 21 about "various event management and ticketing websites" reportedly being used to conduct fraud.

Scammers have allegedly been using those websites to create fake event links that prompt prospective attendees to purchase tickets for those events, "in one instance trying to charge $23," police explained.

Those fraudsters have been including names of local businesses and non-profit agencies in those links—like the library, for example—in an attempt to draw in more potential targets.

“We want to make sure our community knows we don’t charge for events, and it’s very sad to be misrepresented,” said Mikale Fenton, director of the Whistler Public Library, in the release. “We are working with the RCMP to ensure these fraudulent event listings are taken down.”

To avoid falling victim to these scams, RCMP recommend ensuring event and ticketing website links are legitimate before throwing down your credit card.
