A fire near Anderson Lake in the summer of 2023 was just one of many burning in the boundaries of the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District.

With the spectre of wildfire season looming large, provincial fire officials are hosting a public open house in D’Arcy next week to present plans for reducing risk in the region.

The Sea to Sky Natural Resource District and BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) are inviting the public to the N’Quatqua Ti xzuma tsitcw (Big House) on Tuesday, July 15 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The Big House community centre is located at the intersection of Pemberton Portage Road and Lakeshore Drive in D’Arcy.

Officials from the District and BCWS will discuss planned fuel management and prescribed burn projects in the areas around D’Arcy, Devine and Birken.

The Tuesday event will include presentations from forestry officials, along with info booths and light refreshments. Representatives from the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District, Birken Fire Department and N’Quatqua leadership will also be participating in the session.

The outreach effort comes as B.C. endures a warmer-than-normal summer, with below-average precipitation and heightened fire danger across much of the province. As of July 8, firefighting crews are battling 77 wildfires across the province. And while that’s just under half as many fires as were active at this time last year, Minister of Forests Ravi Parmar said the province is expecting strong winds, thunderstorms and lightning that could make existing wildfires more extreme and spark new blazes.

The Tuesday event in D’Arcy will include presentations from forestry officials, along with info booths and light refreshments.
