A rezoning application for Rainbow Plaza could clear the way for a new daycare facility in Whistler.

A rezoning application at Rainbow Plaza could add some much-needed daycare spaces north of Whistler.

The application from Calgary-based Rainbow Canuck Properties Ltd. seeks to amend the current zoning of the commercial site at 8200 Bear Paw Trail “to improve the viability of the commercial tenancies” on site.

If successful, the rezoning would apply a number of small changes to the existing CD1 zoning to allow a greater variety of commercial uses.

There is currently one unoccupied commercial unit on site, and the developer has identified a potential childcare operator to fill it, according to a staff report to council.

The applicant has demonstrated that the vacant space (170 square metres of gross floor area) can accommodate 24 kids and five staff, the report said.

Council will consider first and second readings at its Feb. 16 meeting.

A public hearing will follow.

Council will also hear an update on the Community Energy and Climate Action Plan on Feb. 16, and consider third reading for Cheakamus Crossing Phase 2 following a Jan. 26 public hearing.
