Water usage restrictions are in effect in the Resort Municipality of Whistler.

The warm weather seen in Whistler lately is leading to an increase in water usage locally, prompting the Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) to move to Stage 2 water conservation restrictions.

Stage 2 restrictions allow lawns, trees, shrubs and flowerbeds to be watered by hand on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday from 8 p.m. to 10 a.m., by automatic in-ground irrigation any day between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m, or by automatic drip irrigation at any time.

Water use conservation regulations apply only to the use of potable drinking water. Using rainwater, grey water, or any form of recycled water is not restricted. RMOW staff monitor Whistler's water supply and activate water use restrictions by evaluating the water supply (such as reservoir levels) and forecasts.

Water reservoirs have decreased due to increased usage because of the warmer weather Whistler is currently experiencing. Typically potable water use increases by more than 50 per cent in the summer months.

Fire risk continues to be a concern in the community, and having adequate water in local reservoirs is critical for fighting fires

Stage 2 will be rescinded if the situation improves, but if the water shortage becomes more severe, further discussions will be held before recommending moving to Stage 3 water conservation.
