Dozen temperature records broken across B.C. this week

A dozen temperature records were broken across the province as hot, summer-like weather poured in this week.

Several communities saw record-high temperatures on Friday, April 28, as seen in a summary from Environment Canada, including Whistler, Victoria, Abbotsford, Squamish, and Hope. 

Around Metro Vancouver, Squamish saw the highest temperatures at 27.4 C. The previous record of 24 C was set in 2005. Whistler and Abbotsford, meanwhile, both hit 25.7 C on Friday. Whistler's former record of 22.6 was set in 1989, while Abbotsford's old record of 24.4 C was set in 1957. 

On the Island, Victoria also reached a new record at 22 C. The city's old record was set nearly a century ago in 1926 at 21.1 C. 

The hottest temperature recorded in B.C. was in Merritt, which saw a new record of 29.4 C, about two degrees hotter than the 27.2 C record set in 1926.

  • Cache Creek - New record of 29.2 (Old record of 29.0 set in 1979)
  • Clinton Area - New record of 22.6 (Old record of 21.1 set in 1979)
  • Gibsons - New record of 22.9 (Old record of 19.5 set in 2005)
  • Hope - New record of 28.1 (Old record of 25.6 set in 1957)
  • Malahat - New record of 20.4 (Old record of 20.0 set in 1989)
  • Merritt - New record of 29.4 (Old record of 27.2 set in 1926)
  • Sechelt - New record of 22.9 (Old record of 20.0 set in 1976)
  • Squamish - New record of 27.4 (Old record of 24.0 set in 2005)
  • Victoria - New record of 22.0 (Old record of 21.1 set in 1926)
  • Whistler - New record of 25.7 (Old record of 22.6 set in 1989)
