The Axes and Oars women's rugby program has found the win column.
Comprised of players from both Squamish's Axemen and the Vancouver Rowers, the team put together an impressive performance in Chilliwack to emerge with a 37-5 victory. Head coach and captain Lauren Arthur led by example and was named best player of the match.
When Arthur first took the job, she intended to build the Axes and Oars into a competitive roster without sacrificing the club's inclusive atmosphere. Last Saturday's breakthrough represented a notable step forward after some early-season trials (including a 71-0 October loss in Kelowna).
"We took our first win of the regular season today at Brockton Oval," said a club spokesperson on social media after the match. "Hopefully many more wins to come with these beauties."
Meanwhile, the Axemen's Division 2 program kept their undefeated season intact with a commanding 53-10 win against the Surrey Beavers. Ryan Kettler and Mike Snook distinguished themselves on a great all-around day for the team.
The Division 3 men had tougher luck, falling 21-17 as Richmond punched in a pair of late tries to prevail. Kane Strachan found the end zone, and Ollie Richards made plays on both sides of the ball to help the Axemen return home with a bonus point in defeat.
All three teams are on a bye this weekend, returning to action Nov. 18.
