Need a bike? Getting a new bike and want to sell your old one?

The Whistler Off-Road Cycling Association (WORCA) connects buyers and sellers every spring at their annual bike swap, raising money for their youth programs.

This year the bike swap will take place on Saturday, April 24 at a new location, the 2010 Whistler Celebration Plaza that was last used to present medals to Olympic and Paralympic champions.

The bike swap has outgrown its previous location at Creekside. Last year, despite almost doubling the space from the previous year, the area was swamped with bikes. Roughly $107,000 in bikes and bike gear were sold, raising over $12,000 for WORCA's youth programs.

This year a portion of that money will go towards the Whistler high school mountain bike team, which will be hosting the B.C. high school championships in May. Some of the funding will also go towards the WORCA youth toonie nights.

Bike drop-off is from 8:30 a.m. until 10 a.m. when the swap opens to the public. Bike pick-up is from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The cost is $2 per item, plus a 10 per cent commission on bikes/gear priced at $1,000 or more, or 15 per cent on purchases of $999 or less.

In addition to the bike swap WORCA is also in the process of organizing its annual trail sweep days. Because of snow on higher elevation trails the dates have been pushed back to May 8 and May 22, details to be announced. As well, WORCA is looking for trail maintenance sponsors this year to help draw more people and more interest to projects around the valley. Last season volunteers contributed work worth tens of thousands of dollars to the trail network, and WORCA wants to build on that momentum. For more information visit www.worca.com.
