Gymnasts strong in Zone, provincial finals

The Whistler Gymnastics Club split up at the end of May to compete in the zone and provincial finals. Most of the older girls went to the KATTS Invitational in Kamloops on May 26, while the younger girls went on to the Zone 5 Finals on May 27.

Most of the older girls went to the KATTS Invitational in Kamloops on May 26, while the younger girls went on to the Zone 5 Finals on May 27. Both groups were successful on the road, and brought home their share of the medals.

Zone 5 includes the Sea to Sky area, the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island. In the Kids In Progress (KIP) meet where everyone is rewarded, Annike Tetreault won gold medals on the vault, bars and beam, and a silver on the floor. Riley McSkimming and Makina Coombs won gold on the vault and bars, and silver medals on the beam and floor.

Madelaine Podborski won a gold on the bars and silvers on the vault, beam and floor. Angelina Manuel won gold on the bars, silvers on the vault and the beam and a bronze on the floor. Emily Barratt and Hilary Carrell won a silver on the bars and bronze medals on the vault, beam and floor. Ashlen Coombs was injured, and Beckie Boese and Olivia Murray were absent for the meet.

In the Argo level, Christine Brett finished third overall in the zone with gold medals on the bars and the beam, a fifth place finish on the vault and an 11 th on the floor. Merritt Patterson was 17 th on the vault, fifth on the bars, 16 th on the beam and 19 th on the floor to finish 12 th overall, and Tegan Turcotte was 18 th , 11 th on and 11 th respectively to finish in 13 th . Michaela D’Artois, Abigail Cameron and Samantha Depatie also made it into the top 20, finishing 17 th , 18 th and 19 th overall.

Julia Murray was the lone Tyro at the meet, but managed to finish in sixth overall with a gold on the floor, a fourth on the bars, a fifth on the beam and a sixth on the vault.

At the KATTS meet, Argo tumbler Stephanie Moody finished fourth overall with a gold on the beam, a silver on the floor, a fifth on the vault and a 10 th on the beam. Megan McSkimming was sixth overall and Holly Hetherington was 10th.

In the Provincial Level 1 Tyro age group, Julianna Waters finished fourth with a silver medal on the beam, a fourth on the vault, a sixth on the floor and a 13 th on the bars. Melissa Manuel was right behind her in fifth with a bronze on the floor. Rachel Kleinman was seventh, winning gold for the floor.

Nicola Bennett was the only girl in the open category, and finished in second overall with silvers on the vault, beam and bars, and a bronze on the floor.

In the Provincial Level 2 meet, Midget tumblers Renee Palkovsky, Nickie Sadler and Frances Moody finished third, fourth and seventh overall. Palkovsky won a silver on the floor and a bronze on the bars and Sadler won a silver on the vault and a bronze on the beam.

In the Provincial 2 Tyro category, Tawnya Robson, Natasha Quinn and Alex Rusimovich finished fifth, sixth and seventh overall.
