Rail king crowned

The second King of the Rail event took place this past Saturday, Jan. 12 under the lights at the base of Blackcomb, with another solid turnout of 50 skiers and snowboarders of all ages.

The second King of the Rail event took place this past Saturday, Jan. 12 under the lights at the base of Blackcomb, with another solid turnout of 50 skiers and snowboarders of all ages.

The participants themselves voted for the top athletes in each category, which receive cash prizes. As well, participants have a chance to win draw prizes donated by Showcase Snowboards, Glacier Shop, Atomic, Sapient, Nintendo, Telus, DNA, and other sponsors.

In the Ski Male 16 and Over category, Alexi Grodeart placed first in the voting and won the $35 prize.

In Snowboard Male 16 and Over, the top male was Jerome Lessard, who won $100 for his efforts.

In Snowboard Youth 15 and Under, Wade McCracken won his entry fee back with a $15 prize.

Emanuelle Blanchette was the top female skier, 16 and over, and also earned $15.

The top Snowboard Female 16 and Over was Claudia Avon, who earned the $20 prize.

Prize amounts are determined by the number of participants in each category.

The overall King of the Rail was Alexi Grodeart.

Hiberto Rodriques won the draw prize for the Sapient snowboard, while Julien Archambault won the Atomic Punx skis.

The next event is set for Feb. 16. Registration gets underway at 5 p.m. at the Whistler Kids registration desk at the base of Blackcomb, and the rail jam runs from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. All participants need to sign a waiver, or have a waiver signed by a parent or guardian.
