Rally Team wins again

The Rocket Rally Racing Team easily outdistanced the other factory production cars and finished sixth overall against souped up open class vehicles at the Maine Forest Summer Rally last weekend.

The core of the Rocket Rally team, which is part of the Subaru Canada Rally Team, is driver Patrick Richard, a former Whistler resident now living in Vancouver, and navigator Ian McCurdy, who still lives and works in Whistler.

"Our strategy was to take it easy on the first leg of the event, on Friday night, and then keep a steady pace on the second leg. We were practically 100 per cent on the plan," said McCurdy.

The team lost between 30 ad 40 seconds when they were blinded by dust and crashed into a large rock, but by the third day they were on pace with the leaders, and nine minutes ahead of the next team in the production class, SCCA ProRally PGT points leader Mark Utecht.

"We finished the race sandwiched between much more powerful Open Class cars and just behind the top Group N entry. This has been a very satisfying victory for me and the team," said Richard.

Rocket Rally’s next event is the Ojibwe Forests Rally on Aug. 17 and 18.

The Maine Forest Summer Rally will be televised several times on Speedvision, beginning on Aug. 27 at 11 p.m. Pacific Time.
