A pair of local athletes supported by the Telus Whistler Sport Centre are getting a little road money this year from the 2010 LegaciesNow Athlete Travel Program.
World Cup snowboarder Dan Raymond and mountain biker-slash-road racer Will Routley were selected to receive the $250 grants.
"These are the first two out of five grants that we will award," said Todd Allison, the general manager of the Telus Whistler Sport Centre. "We would like to be able to help all athletes in their endeavours towards sporting excellence but are limited to a select few in this initiative. We know how tough it is to excel in sport and we continue to look for ways to help athletes."
Through PacificSport, 2010 LegaciesNow committed to supplying athletes with $20,000 in the form of travel grants throughout the province. Whistler’s share of that total was $1,250.
While a $250 grant barely makes a dent in either Raymond or Routley’s total travel budget, with both athletes competing across Canada and around the world, it helps. Routley also received the travel grant last year.
The other three athletes to receive grants will be chosen in the spring.
