Whistler Mountain Ski Club hosts 2023 Bob Parsons Memorial

Felix Shorter claimed this year's Parsons Trophy, while fellow Whistlerites Liv Imregi, Dylan Boyd, Ivan Dolado Costillo and Yuzi Tazawa also raced to podium finishes

The Whistler Mountain Ski Club (WMSC) recently welcomed FIS athletes from around British Columbia, Alberta and the United States for a week of speed and technical ski racing at the 43rd Bob Parsons Memorial and the BC Cup.

WMSC contender Felix Shorter won this year's Parsons Trophy, awarded on Feb. 22 by Griffin Parsons to the top male and female skiers across both super-G races that day. Jasmine Coubrough of the Okanagan Ski Team earned the women's Parsons Trophy, while WMSC's Liv Imregi finished second in the earlier of the two women's events.

The following day, temperatures dipped well below -15 C, thanks in part to robust winds that made the longest giant slalom race of the year a stiff challenge.

Dylan Boyd and Ivan Dolado Costillo of the WMSC managed to overcome the conditions, placing second and third respectively. It was a slower race than normal, with most athletes needing close to one minute and 30 seconds to reach the line (compared to the sub one-minute runs found at many other venues).

Things wrapped up on Feb. 24 with a slalom under sunny skies. Another WMSC male, Yuki Tazawa, distinguished himself with a first-place performance.

FIS coaches put on a super-G speed camp on Feb. 20 and 21, allowing athletes to get up to speed before race day. Parents of U12, U14 and U16 skiers worked hard in volunteer roles throughout the week to ensure that each session proceeded smoothly.

"A big thank you to all the volunteers, especially those that put in three days or more mid-week to get this race off," said a WMSC spokesperson in a press release. "Mid-week races are challenging for volunteer numbers, and those that came out really shouldered the load."
