After a very successful swim-a-thon fund-raiser and excellent results at the joint time trial meet against the Squamish Pirates, Whistler Seawolves head coach Heather Thicke has announced that she will be stepping down to get married and pursue other career goals.
Thicke was the coach, the organizer, and the heart and soul of the club for many years and all the parents and kids would like to thank her for the enthusiasm and motivation she brought to the club week in and week out.
Now the club truly starts with a clean slate, and the hope is to form one strong club from the two very distinctive bodies that currently exist, namely the kids swim club and the masters adult program.
With this goal in mind, two "new" coaches experienced members of the masters club have stepped forward to lead the club into the future. Brandi Higgins has been coaching swimming since 1989, and David Higgins is a competitive swimmer who has been world-ranked in the 50 metre freestyle.
This time the aim is to let the coaches do what they do best coach. They will also establish an organizing committee to promote the club in Whistler and elsewhere.
Anyone with any thoughts on where swimming should be in the future, whether youre a young swimmer or a parent, a masters swimmer or a triathlete, or just swim for your own fitness and enjoyment, we would like to hear from you. We have booked the Sonia Derby room at Meadow Park Sports Centre at 6 p.m. on July 9 to hold an informal meeting to discuss the future of the club, everything from the club name, to future coaching times, to pricing.
It is time to put the Whistler swim club on the map. We need your help to do that.
