Athletes win six medals in sprint race

By Andrew Mitchell

Whistler athletes made a strong showing at the annual North Shore Spring Triathlon on Monday, May 21, and several finished on the podium.

It was a sprint distance triathlon, with athletes swimming 750 metres in the pool, biking 20 km, and running 5 km — partly off-road.

Whistler’s David Higgins placed fourth overall, finishing in just one hour and 37 seconds — 33 seconds back of first place overall, but fast enough to place first out of 22 athletes in the men’s 35 to 39 age category. He was fourth out of the water, but moved up to third on the bike leg until he was edged out in the run by the fastest run time of the day. Higgins had the fourth fastest run.

Marie-Anne Prevost also won her category, placing first in the women’s 35 to 39 age category, third among women and 17 th overall in 1:06:09. She was 50 th out of the water, but made up for that with a fast bike and fast run.

Prevost also beat out her partner Bob Deeks by one spot and four seconds. Deeks finished third in the men’s 45 to 49 age category and 18 th overall in a time of 1:06:13.

Although she missed the Ironman world championships last year after injuring her ankle in the Squamish Triathlon, Christine Suter rebounded by finishing second to Prevost in the 35 to 39 age category. She was 23 rd overall and seventh among women in a time of 1:07:12.

Ross McLynn scooped up the bronze medal in the men’s 25 to 29 category and placed 47 th overall in 1:11:00.

Brandi Higgins was seventh in the women’s 35 to 39 race in 1:15:14.

Karen Blaylock was third in the women’s 45 to 49 race in 1:17:04.

Jennifer Leigh was seventh in the women’s 40 to 44 group in 1:20:59.

In the team relay, Team Flower Power was sixth in the women’s category with a time of 1:41:43.
