The search for a missing hiker near Lions Bay has ended tragically.

On June 9, Squamish RCMP reported that Michael Tu died from accidental injuries. He was found on June 8 at approximately 6 p.m., after he was overdue from a hike to Mount Harvey, northeast of Lions Bay.

The police do not believe Tu’s death is suspicious or criminal in nature.

“Unfortunately, this search did not have the outcome we were hoping for,” said Cpl. Angela Kermer with the Sea to Sky RCMP in a release.

“We are, however, very thankful to community volunteers who helped search, and to Lions Bay Search and Rescue who were exceptional with their work.”

Tu reportedly went hiking in Lions Bay on June 7 around 11 a.m. Investigators believe the hiker made it to the top of Mount Harvey before sustaining the injuries. His car was found in a parking lot near the trailhead.

Lions Bay Search and Rescue worked to locate Tu and the police had asked the public to keep their eyes out for him if they were hiking near the area.

Lions Bay Search and Rescue posted on Instagram on June 10 that search efforts from all parties have ended.

"Our hearts are heavy with this outcome, our deepest condolences to Michael’s family, friends and colleagues," reads the post.
