Three people were killed and two others seriously injured in a two-vehicle crash Tuesday evening in Pickering, Ont.

Ontario Provincial Police said Wednesday the head-on collision involving two SUVs occurred on Highway 7 at Concession Road 6 around 7 p.m.

An 82-year-old woman, who was the sole occupant of the eastbound SUV, was pronounced dead at the scene. Two passengers in the westbound SUV – a 63-year-old woman and a 68-year-old woman – were also pronounced dead, police said.

They said the 64-year-old male driver and the 70-year-old front-seat male passenger in the westbound vehicle were taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The westbound SUV drifted into eastbound lanes before the collision, police said.

In a video posted to social media, OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said the circumstances surrounding the crash remain unknown.

"At this time, we do not believe weather or environmental factors or mechanical issues contributed to this crash. There's no indication of alcohol at this time," Schmidt said.

Police ask anyone who may have witnessed the collision or has dashcam footage of the incident to contact the Toronto or Whitby OPP detachments.
