Hamilton police say a 10-year-old child was killed and six others were injured in a three-vehicle collision over the weekend.

Police say officers responded to the crash in the area of Trinity Church Road and Guyatt Road around 9:30 p.m. on Sunday.

They say a preliminary investigation indicates that a GMC Sierra travelling southbound on Trinity Church Road at a high rate of speed crossed the centre line in an attempt to pass another pickup truck.

Police say the GMC Sierra truck collided head-on with a Honda Civic carrying four people and pushed the car backward into the path of a Ford Explorer.

All four occupants of the Honda Civic sustained injuries and a 10-year-old child was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Police say one car passenger remains in life-threatening condition, another is in critical condition, and the three occupants of the GMC Sierra also sustained minor injuries.

Anyone with information or dashcam footage is asked to contact investigators.

They roads in the area were closed for several hours as police investigated.
