Letter: SD48 needs to hire more Whistler bus drivers

'Imagine yourself in a new country with a young daughter, unable to speak the language, standing in the rain, waiting for a school bus that never arrives'

School buses parked in Pemberton. Like almost every industry and region, the Sea to Sky School District is struggling with a labour shortage.

Our neighbours just arrived in Whistler.

They rely on the school bus to take their daughter to school, as they have no vehicle, and both parents walk to work as house cleaners in the village.

They do not speak English, and cannot read the last-minute emails notifying parents about school bus cancellations.

SD48 has created the unthinkable habit of using school bus cancellations to cover for their inability to hire the required number of school bus drivers, for the past four years and counting.

Sure, there are budgetary concerns, labour shortages, and housing limitations which make hiring school bus drivers in Whistler especially challenging, and that’s understandable.

But imagine yourself in a new country with a young daughter, unable to speak the language, standing in the rain, waiting for a school bus that never arrives.
