Letter to the Editor: We need to address our own climate failings first

'Climate refugees here would multiply their individual ecological impacts by a factor of 10, compounding the problem that they fled'

Welcoming climate migrants to Canada is not the solution, says this Whistler letter writer.

[Should Canada become a haven for climate change migrants?] The answer to this question is a resounding NO! (Pique, “Uninhabitable: As parts of the world become uninhabitable due to rising heat, a group of refugee lawyers say Canada could become an important oasis,” Oct. 7, 2021.)

What with our outrageously high carbon footprints, the last thing this beleaguered planet needs is more Canadians.

Shortly after arrival, climate refugees here would multiply their individual ecological impacts by a factor of 10, compounding the problem that they fled.

If Canada were seriously concerned about the welfare of those most vulnerable to the crisis we helped create, we would immediately and drastically reduce our GHG emissions and we would also massively increase our foreign- aid budget in order to finance local climate change mitigation initiatives for victims most in need.
