Letter: What role do property taxes play in Whistler’s housing woes?

'It’s in the municipality’s best interest to keep the status quo. Why would they want to give themselves a pay cut?'

After reading the article about how nothing has changed in the housing crisis for the last 25 years, I’m surprised no one has mentioned property taxes.

It’s in the municipality’s best interest to keep the status quo. Why would they want to give themselves a pay cut? There’s no benefit having townhouses and duplexes built when you can make more in taxes with one $20-million property.

Once the Resort Municipality of Whistler budget doesn’t rely on property taxes almost exclusively, things will change—until then, good luck to newcomers.
