A $46,000 fine against a developer reportedly caught violating a WorkSafeBC stop-work order at a Burnaby highrise project is under review.
WorkSafe ordered all work to stop above Level 5 at Amacon Construction Ltd.'s 22-storey condo tower project at 4455 Alaska St. on May 31, 2023, according to reports obtained by the NOW.
The building was in its finishing stages, and the crane and hoist had been removed, but the elevator wasn't available for use, posing an "increased health and safety risk to workers who may require first aid and medical attention," according to WorkSafe.
"The employer could also not provide a risk assessment or emergency procedures for the current work in the tower," stated a WorkSafe report.
When the inspector who had issued the stop-work order returned for a follow-up inspection on June 9, 2023, he found an elevator inspector still testing and inspecting the elevator.
Regulations governing elevators temporarily used for construction require the equipment to be inspected by an elevator safety officer before being put into operation.
"I determined that the employer has failed to comply with the stop work order," stated the WorkSafe inspector.
Amacon was fined $46,043 for the violation but has applied for a review.
