As of Nov. 9, anyone entering Municipal Hall, the Pemberton & District Community Centre, the Fire Hall or the Public Works building will be required to wear a mask to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

There are exemptions for: children under two or under five if they “chronologically or developmentally” refuse to wear a mask or face covering; those with medical conditions who cannot wear one; those who can’t wear one without assistance; those engaging in physical activity; staff who are able to maintain two metres of distance from others in an area that is not publicly accessible or who are behind a physical barrier; or those who are eating or drinking.

During council's regular meeting on Nov. 3, chief administrative officer Nikki Gilmore noted that staff members at the community centre have been wearing masks for “many months.”

Coun. Ted Craddock added that while he’s against mandating masks in the community at large (which Mayor Mike Richman said later was not within the Village’s authority), he encouraged shoppers going to stores to wear a mask.

“It’s beneficial not only for the people working in the stores but also for people going in,” he said. “I certainly would support a message from council that we support the wearing of masks for safety purposes.”
