A fire at the Westshore Terminals in Delta has forced a 10-week closure at one of its berths.
The company said the fire at Berth 1 is expected to reduce the terminal’s 2025 cargo volumes, while operations will continue at Berth 2 continue.
The fire broke out Saturday on the shiploader that services Berth 1. Fire crews extinguished the blaze safely, and no injuries were reported, according to Sunday’s announcement from Westshore Terminals Investment Corporation (TSX: WTE).
Berth 1’s 10-week decommissioning will allow repairs to the mechanical and electrical systems, the company said.
Westshore said it will provide an update on the duration of the outage after it performs a detailed inspection and confirms the time to source replacement parts or materials.
“Westshore will work with its customers and the railways to reduce the impact as much as possible,” said the company.
Operations at Berth 2 will continue as normal while Berth 1 is under repair.
As a result of the closure, Westshore now expects the terminal's shipping volumes for 2025 to be 24-24.5 million tonnes, down from the previously disclosed estimate of around 26 million tonnes.
The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority is searching for a construction company to plan and build the Roberts Bank Terminal 2 expansion in Delta, a three-berth marine container terminal. Construction is planned to begin in 2028, and the terminal is expected to be in operation by the mid-2030s.
