Delta business aircraft crashes in Newfoundland, two dead

Incident happened in Deer Lake, Newfoundland, Saturday afternoon

Two people died in a plane crash in Deer Lake, Newfoundland, on the weekend, involving a Delta-based business, Kisik Aerial Survey.

RCMP say the crash happened Saturday afternoon, July 26, at about 5:35 p.m., in Deer Lake, NL., near the Trans-Canada Highway.

Two people were on board, the 54-year-old male pilot, and a 27-year-old male passenger. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

“We are devastated and heartbroken by this loss,” said Andrew Naysmith, owner of Kisik Aerial Survey, based at Boundary Bay Airport.

He said the crash happened at about 5:37 p.m., shortly after the plane took off from Deer Lake Regional Airport.

“Our thoughts and deepest sympathies go out to the families of the deceased and their loved ones. No further details about the incident are available at this time,” Naysmith said.

He said the accident is under investigation by the Transportation Safety Board of Canada, adding that Kisik, “will support that investigation in any and every way possible.”

Naysmith added that names of those involved will be released by the proper authorities.

The crash closed the Trans-Canada Highway near Deer Lake Airport for several hours.

The company operates seven Piper multi-engine aircraft, according to its website.

The Transportation Safety Board said that a Piper PA-31 Navajo aircraft, registered to Kisik Aerial Survey Inc,. crashed about a kilometre south of the airport after taking off on a local flight, according to Canadian Press  

RCMP NL is also supporting the Transportation Safety Board of Canada in the ongoing investigation into the crash.
