WSSF Filmmaker Showdown open for registration
The Telus World Ski and Snowboard Festival (April 8-17, 2005) has opened its 4th Annual Filmmaker Showdown contest for early registration.
The contest is open to amateur and pro filmmakers alike. Entrants must film, produce and edit a three-five minute film in a strictly monitored 72 hour period, taking place this year between April 7-10.
Content must be filmed within 100 km of Whistler. A panel of judges will select eight finalists for a gala screening at the Telus Conference Centre on April 12. The panel will choose one of the finalists as Best of Show.
The contest has proven a popular event at the festival, drawing approximately 50 entries last year. Registration up to April 1 guarantees a spot in the contest.

Griffiths back at Chateau Gallery
Alberta-based soapstone carver Ted Griffiths will be working in residence at the Mountain Gallery at the Fairmont Chateau Whistler beginning Friday, March 11 and continuing through March 20.
Gallery regulars may remember Griffiths, who set up a workstation at the gallery for three days at this time last season to demonstrate the process of soapstone carving: raw rock, blocking, grinding, filing, sanding and polishing.
The amiable former art teacher has made the demonstrative residency his trademark, logging several weeks per year at the mountain galleries in Jasper, Banff and Whistler that carry his works and claiming to be inspired by the interaction.
Griffiths is known mainly for his playful grizzly bear pieces, from tiny ornaments to 500 pound free-standing floor sculptures.

Classical quartet next in Series
The Whistler Arts Council/MY Place 2005 Performance Series goes classical next Thursday, March 17 with a performance by the Quebec-based Alcan Quartet.
The two violin/viola and cello chamber music group has a wide repertoire with recordings of work by Haydn, Mozart, Brahms, Borodin, Debussy, Dvorak, Schubert and Ravel.
When performing, the quartet focuses mostly on contemporary works. The group has played more than 200 works in more than 70 live broadcast performances for CBC Radio, Radio Canada and the National Public Radio Networks in the U.S.
Tickets for the Alcan Quartet are $20 for adults, $17 for youth, available through the MY Place box office at 604-935-8410.
