Whistler Stories, Episode 8

It’s the wedding of the year as Chili and Kelsy get married in a Victorian-style ceremony. The unstoppable yet sexy Linda Stang is prepared to pay any price to stage her event – what will she do to get to the top? – and last but not least, the lovable Lauren Fraser uses creativity to find homes for Whistler’s homeless pets at the WAG animal shelter.

It’s time for a NiteCap, and all that Jazz

There’s nothing better than good jazz and NiteCap would have to be the premiere vocal jazz ensemble.

NiteCap is made up of the best of the best from Capilano College's four-year jazz studies degree program and they’re coming to MY Place tonight, March 14 at 8 p.m. NiteCap is an innovative ensemble with an eclectic approach, including material from renaissance madrigals through to contemporary jazz. The music they sing is challenging and thanks to its director, Réjean Marois, includes a great deal of original and French material.

Originally from Québec, the conductor and composer is renowned for his variety of musical styles. Marois moved to B.C. in 1988 to work with the College and has been instrumental in its reputation for excellence, drawing students from across Canada.

NiteCap's achievements include performances at the 17th Annual International Association of Jazz Educators' Conference in New Orleans, the 21st Annual International Association of Jazz Educators' Conference in Boston, concerts and workshops for the British Columbia Music Educators Conferences and the Pacific Coast Festival.

They have recorded for CBC Radio Canada's nationally broadcast program Jazz Sur Le Vif. They were acclaimed as an outstanding ensemble in DownBeat jazz magazine in 1994 and they’ve spent a lot of time in recording studios as well. In April 1997, NiteCap recorded for Windham Hill Records the vocal tracks of David Arkenstone's latest CD, in association with Ed Lojeski. In 1997, NiteCap were invited by Mr. Nicholas Goldschmidt to perform at Festival Canada, at the National Arts Center, Ottawa. If that’s not enough to keep them on their toes, they’ve released a couple of their own CDs as well.

Hosted by the Whistler Singers, this event is one jazz lovers should not miss. Tickets are $17 and $12. Ph: 604-935-8418.

Stage is set for 24 hour play project

Whistler’s closet playwrights and actors are almost ready to rumble with their first ever 24 Hour Play Project, a fun and frivolous excuse for a get-together of theatrical proportions. At last count, 40 victims, …rather, volunteers had signed up to partake in a collective exercise in creativity and chaos.

Groups of wanna-be writers, directors and actors will meet this Wednesday night, March 19 at MY Place 8 p.m. to hammer out a plan for a play. Exactly 24 hours later, those groups will then perform their final masterpieces for an enthusiastic crowd of supporters.

Organizer, Michele Bush, hopes Thursday night’s show will be the first of many such offerings.

"Who knows? This could be the beginning of a whole series of local 24 hour shows, which of course will be picked up by HBO and we'll all become famous and worshipped by all with limos and champagne," she said.

For those of you still interested, a brainstorming bash will be held this Saturday, March 15 from 4 to 6 p.m. in MY Place’s Multipurpose Room.

"It’s just an opportunity for those who still aren’t sold on the idea to come get answers, but also we can discuss how and where this is going to happen, get some input and hammer out ideas for production," said Bush, who can be contacted at bushwoman@look.ca .

For those who want to see what the brave and bereft in this town can get up to when they put their minds to it, come along to the performance on Thursday, March 20 at 8 p.m.. Tickets are $9.99.
