Fabulous fundraising concert

Live music and painting raise funds for the Kelty Patrick Dennehy

Who: Fabulous George & Zodiacs

When: Friday, Sept. 29, 7:30 p.m.

Where: Buffalo Bill’s

Tickets: $25

Fabulous George and the Zodiacs return with a one-night-only show Friday, Sept. 29 at 7:30 p.m. at Buffalo Bill’s as part of the fifth annual Drive Fore Life Weekend to Remember — a three-day fundraiser for the Kelty Patrick Dennehy Foundation.

From frontman of Fabulous George and the Zodiacs to the front lines of labour law, Don Jordan is a familiar face, particularly in Winnipeg.

It’s been more than 30 years since Fabulous George and the Zodiacs started playing the prairie provinces. The seven-shows-a-week touring built up a large fan base, and a generation that grew up on the psychedelic sounds of the early ’70s is still faithful.

The event’s kick-off rock ’n’ roll concert includes the unique twist of artist Eric Waugh painting live on site. The painting will be auctioned the following night at the Drive Fore Life Gala Dinner at the Fairmont Chateau Whistler. Waugh’s work can also be viewed at the Whistler Village Art Gallery at the Hilton throughout the weekend.

“I think it’s kind of interesting,” Jordan said. “I have no idea what to expect.”

Waugh has painted with the likes of Tony Bennett, Nelly Furtado, the Doobie Brothers and countless orchestras and ensembles over his three years of performance art. Waugh will let the classic rock ’n’ roll of Jordan’s five-piece band inspire his brush. Expect plenty of energy behind the work.

Jordan performed at last year’s fundraiser as well. A close friend of the Dennehys, he wanted to help them raise funds and awareness about the number one killer of youth in B.C., depression.

“I think depression generally is a misunderstood disease,” Jordan said. “People often don’t give it the importance it should get. People need to understand that it can affect anybody. It is not simply about bucking up.”

Tickets for the concert/art performance are $25 and available at the door. Cash only.
