Enjoy the spectacular night sky while also learning about how to use your eyes, binoculars or camera to observe the lunar eclipse on Tuesday, Aug. 28.
Astronmer Bill Burnyeat from the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre turns minds skyward in Moonscapes: A Celebration of Lunar Astronomy, Legend and Lore on Saturday, Aug. 25 at 9 p.m. at Lost Lake Park.
The free Summer Speaker Series event, presented by the Whistler Museum, will get galaxy gazers up close and personal with the moon.
Brush up on your moon knowledge. Did you know in the 1800s an American newspaper gained record circulation with a fake set of dispatches describing lunar creatures visible on a big telescope from South Africa? Or that aboriginal groups in North America described a lunar eclipse as a pack of dogs catching and eating the moon? In Romania, tales were spun of vampires causing moons to bleed red during an eclipse.
The moonstruck are asked to bring warm clothing, a blanket or chair to sit on and bug spray for the outdoor event. If it’s raining Burnyeat’s presentation will be moved to the museum.
