The answer to the age old question of "where to eat?" was recently updated with the publishing of the Zagat Survey 2000/2001 Vancouver Restaurant Guide.

Known for it’s brevity, accuracy and it’s ability to slide into the inside pocket of most dinner jackets, the Zagat Restaurant Survey is one of the most respected guides out there.

What started as an information sheet passed between friends, New York lawyers and food lovers Tim and Nina Zagat took it to the next step. Today it remains the only anonymous, consumer-based dining survey of its kind. In the U.S. alone, over 100,000 diners participate regularly, leading the New York Times to deem the survey "A necessity second only to a valid credit card."

Comments are supplied entirely by customers, who rate restaurants based on food, décor and service on a scale of zero to 30. Cost is an estimate of a single meal with one drink and tip. Each restaurant listing contains symbols indicating whether the restaurant is open late, open Sunday, and accepts credit cards. There is also a symbol to indicate whether the responses were greatly mixed or generally uniform.

The Vancouver "little red book" includes sections on Victoria, Vancouver Island and Whistler. Because of the growing restaurant scene in Whistler and the importance of collecting more consumer ratings, Zagat will be inserting a survey form into a future edition of Pique. The results will be included in the next Vancouver edition of the Zagat.

According to the 2000/2001 guide, the three most popular Whistler restaurants are the Rim Rock Café, La Rúa, and Araxi. Val d’Isere, the Rim Rock, and La Rúa win for best food and service. The Mallard Lounge wins for top décor, followed by La Rúa and Edgewater Lodge. Ingrid’s Village Café leads the top value category, ahead of Grass Roots Café and Aunti Ems Kitchen.
