Percussionists Bruno Roy and Janic Gingras draw on the wondrous everyday sounds of life — the sound of rain, the pounding of a heart — and transform them into a vivacious musical score to be enjoyed by the whole family.
The duo takes audiences on a musical journey drawing on the history of percussion to tell a tale beginning in Brazilian samba running all the way to modern-day hip hop in Rhythm and Stomp on Saturday, Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. at MY Millennium Place as part of the 2006-07 Performance Series.
“Kids love the instruments, and the music seems to have come from every corner of the globe,” said Doti Niedermayer, Whistler Arts Council executive director.
The fast-paced, humour-filled concert travels through musical landscapes of the Middle East, Europe, Africa and the Americas.
The duo will capture children’s imaginations with tales of far off places instrumentalized through unique instruments including the kalungu, djembe, debouka and apito.
The next Performance Series event on the 2006-07 playbill season is International Guitar Night Nov. 1 at MY Place. The forum welcomes the world’s most original guitar players and composers who will showcase a diverse lineup of guitar cultural styles and techniques.
Rhythm and Stomp tickets are $10 for children 12 and under, $13 for students/seniors and $15 for adults. Whistler Arts Council members pay $13. Council membership is $25.
