For some, Sunday, Jan. 26 is the biggest party of the year. For others it’s the chance to knock back a few brews and pay homage to the heroes of a by-gone era. Which day is whose is anybody’s guess but there’s plenty going on either way.
For those looking to celebrate Down Under-style, head to the base of Whistler gondola where word has it there’s always a cricket match underway well before the bars even open.
The Longhorn has become the traditional stomping ground for the drunken marsupial masses but Black’s big patio and pub next door is another damn fine and perhaps less rowdy option. Both bars will be open from 11 a.m. At Black’s, Guitar Doug will pull out all his favourite Aussie songs from 3 until 6 p.m. At the Longhorn, big screen TVs will show the Super Bowl plus cricket or Aussie Rules.
Later in the evening, Garf’s will open its doors with reduced cover for Aussies from 9 p.m. There will be a competition for best wet Aussie as the staff hose whoever wants to be soaked. DJ Trix will play all your fave Cold Chisel, Midnight Oil and Powderfinger songs.
For those wanting to see some pirates play football, catch the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Oakland Raiders from 2 p.m. at the Crab Shack. Eight TVs, game time food and stay afterwards to catch rising Vancouver punk rock band, Exithiside. Buffalo Bill’s and the Brew House get good crowds and the Pemberton Hotel is a good out-of-the-way option.
The GLC, Merlin’s and Dusty’s are going Super Bowl tailgate crazy this year with special visits from the Budweiser Girls at Blackcomb and Whistler Creekside.
The GLC is billed as Kegs and Eggs – all day breakfast and beer. The Dubh Linn Gate has three TVs and Hoz’s is putting on a Mexican buffet.
Tapley’s Pub always fills early for Super Bowl Sunday, with prizes, half time chili and hot dogs. With seven TVs, even a couple outside by the smoking lounge, it’s a top spot for sporting enthusiasts.
