Richmond RCMP have identified a suspect linked to a series of mail thefts from 2023.

Richmond RCMP recently identified a suspect linked to a series of mail thefts from 2023 with the help of police from Vancouver and Burnaby.

According to Richmond RCMP, the suspect allegedly broke into mailboxes inside nine residential buildings between Nov. 8 and 12 last year.

While charges are pending and the investigation is active and ongoing, the suspect has yet to be arrested, Richmond RCMP spokesperson Adriana O'Malley told the Richmond News.

She added police are unable to release specific details about the suspect as charges have not been approved.

"Officers from our property crime unit review every break and enter investigation in Richmond. By doing this we are often able to link investigations based on video surveillance, modus operandi or other evidence," said Cpl Ryan Lee, Richmond RCMP Property Crime Unit.

"We also work with other police jurisdictions because criminals don’t stop at the city limits. By working collaboratively we increase the likelihood of identifying suspects involved in property crime offences."

Tips for residential security

Police suggest community members consider the following tips to keep their homes safe:

  • Get to know your neighbours. Knowing who belongs in your building is a great way to protect yourself
  • Don’t let strangers into your building. Most people will understand that you are not being rude by not letting them in. Your neighbours will thank you for helping to keep the building safe
  • Check your mailbox every day
  • Talk to your building manager or Strata Council about installing security cameras.
