Controlled burning is taking place in Whistler this week.

If you're seeing or smelling smoke in Whistler this week, fret not—it's all part of the plan.

The Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) is undertaking controlled burns this week as part of its fire mitigation efforts.

"With this week's ideal venting conditions, fuel management crews will conduct planned burns in Whistler. Crews are burning piles of woody debris for the purpose of wildfire risk reduction," the RMOW said in a Facebook post.

Burning began in the Kadenwood area on Oct. 11, and smoke may be visible in the area until Friday, Oct. 13, the RMOW said.

Burning near Rainbow (above Ski Jump Rise) will take place on Oct. 13 and 14.

"The RMOW is working with skilled, registered professional foresters to undertake a controlled burn in the Rainbow TU3 area," the municipality said.

"This important work is part of the RMOW’s wildfire mitigation work."
