COS issues reminder after bear 'accessed food from picnic table' at Whistler's Meadow Park

Visitors to the park are asked to avoid bringing food or having picnics for the next few days

Residents and guests to Whistler are asked to redouble their efforts around attractants after a bear found a free meal at Meadow Park on Sunday.

According to a Conservation Officer Service report, shared by the Resort Municipality of Whistler, a black bear accessed food from a picnic table near the splash pad at Meadow Park on Sunday, July 6.

Visitors to the park are asked to avoid bringing food or having picnics for the next few days.

"Please do not leave food or drinks unattended at any time. Store your food in a locked vehicle or bearproof bin, and have at least one person watching over it before you leave the picnic area," reads a post on the RMOW's website.

"If a garbage can is full, please let us know at 604-935-8280 or [email protected] and pack your garbage out with you."

Whistlerites and tourists are asked to report wildlife-human interactions where public safety may be at risk to the RAPP Line at 1-877-952-7277. 

"Conservation Officers will continue to monitor the situation.It is our responsibility as a community to keep these bears wild and safe, so let’s play our part to manage our wildlife attractants," the RMOW said.
