Howe Sound COVID Numbers May9-15 SCREENSHOT

The Howe Sound health region recorded 14 new lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 between May 9 and 15, according to the BC Centre for Disease Control (BC CDC).

Comprising Whistler, Pemberton, Squamish, and parts of the southern Stl’atl’mx Nation, the Vancouver Costal Health (VCH) region’s caseload continues to drop. The Howe Sound region tallied 39 new cases between May 4 and 10, and in Whistler, more than a month removed from the mass vaccination of eligible local residents and employees, the resort saw fewer than five new cases during the same span. (VCH does not publicize specific case numbers under a certain threshold to protect medical privacy.)

Between Jan. 1, 2020 and April 30, 2021, the Howe Sound health area recorded 2,840 cases of the novel coronavirus.

Last month, VCH said it had so far delivered 17,100 doses of vaccine to residents of Whistler and its neighbouring communities. For the entire VCH health authority, which covers the Sea to Sky, Vancouver, Richmond, the North Shore and Coast Garibaldi, Sunshine Coast, Powell River, Bella Bella and Bella Coola, 645,795 doses of vaccine have been administered, with 30,840 of those being second doses.

The weekly case map by health-service delivery area was discontinued as of last week now that the BC CDC has launched its new COVID-19 dashboard, which provides the latest information on cases, recoveries, deaths, hospitalizations, and testing, displayed in a number of interactive data charts and graphs.  The dashboard also offers a breakdown of COVID data by health region, community, and even by neighbourhood in larger populated areas. (At press time, the dashboard does not go into community- or neighbourhood-specific detail in the Howe Sound region.)

The dashboard is updated Monday to Friday at 5 p.m.

For the entire VCH health authority, there are 1,087 active cases, including 111 currently hospitalized. VCH has recorded a total of 34,160 cases during the pandemic, of which 32,615 have recovered, and 450 have died.
