Several Whistler Blackcomb lifts to remain closed Thursday

'Extreme' winds and 'heavy' snow in the alpine proving challenging

Several Whistler Blackcomb lifts will not be running Thursday, Jan. 12.

If you're still planning on heading up the mountain today, here's the latest from Whistler Blackcomb (WB).

"As expected, conditions on the mountain have been challenging for opening today due to the new extreme weather system passing through," WB said in an update posted to social media on Thursday morning.

"Winds are currently gusting upwards of 80 km/h in alpine zones as snow continues to fall in heavy amounts. Conditions like this present increased avalanche risk and make it unsafe for our teams to operate lifts."

With that in mind, WB won't be opening the following lifts today: Peak Express; Harmony 6 Express; Symphony Express; 7th Heaven; and Glacier Express.

As of 11:45 a.m., a rainfall warning was still in effect for Whistler and the Sea to Sky.,
