Uber arrives in Whistler—with limited drivers

'Ride availability varies depending on the number of drivers in that area, but we’re growing every day and always looking for more to join the road'

Uber has finally landed in Whistler.

Whistlerites and tourists have another transportation option at their disposal, with the arrival of ride-sharing app Uber in the resort—but with limited drivers on the road, the service will take some time to ramp up.

As of the morning of Thursday, June 19, the app was showing exactly one driver on the road available for rides in Whistler, charging just over $14 for a ride from Whistler Village to Function Junction.

"While the app is available across the entire province, rides are only available where drivers are actively signed up and go online to do trips," said Uber's corporate communications lead for Canada Keerthana Rang in an email. "Ride availability varies depending on the number of drivers in that area, but we’re growing every day and always looking for more to join the road."

Uber's arrival in Whistler has been a long timing coming. A previous ride-sharing app, Whistle!, ceased operation in January 2024, leading to a surge in applications to the Passenger Transportation Board.

“As we head into a busy summer season, we are excited to bring rideshare to more British Columbians. Residents and visitors alike now have a safe, affordable, and reliable option to help get them where they need to go, when they need to,” said Michael van Hemmen, general manager of Uber Canada, in a release. “And for those with a safe driving record, a flexible opportunity to earn money on their own time.”
