The Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) has announced that, as of May 1, the local fire danger rating is high.
By direction of Fire Chief Thomas Doherty, fires and residential campfires are currently banned to mitigate the risk of human-caused wildfires.
A press release elaborates: "No fires are allowed in Whistler when the fire danger rating is high or extreme. The campfire ban will remain in effect until further notice. A CSA-rated or ULC-rated portable campfire apparatus that uses propane fuel is still allowed in Whistler, as long as the height of the flame is less than 15 centimetres and it is used in accordance with the manufacturer recommendations.
"Effective immediately, all high-risk construction activity in the interface area (within 10 metres of the forest) shall cease at 13:00 hours each day. A minimum 2-hour fire watch is required after construction ceases. Please refer to [RMOW] construction regulations for more details."
To report a wildfire, call 911 or 1 800 663-5555 toll-free, or dial *5555 on a cell phone.
