Whistler RCMP say partiers were generally respectful over the 2022 New Year's weekend.

The New Year’s Eve weekend in Whistler might have been a busy one, but it seems like most revellers kept their partying on the legal side as 2022 came to an end.

According to Whistler RCMP, police responded to a total of 29 calls for service throughout the day and evening of Dec. 31, with complaints ranging from mischief, false alarms, collisions, drugs, noise bylaws and calls related to the Mental Health Act. Still, locals and visitors were overall “very respectful” of Whistler’s laws and bylaws during the holiday weekend, police said in a release.

The Dec. 31 calls were just a portion of the 141 files that Whistler RCMP opened in the week spanning Dec. 27 to Jan. 2, including five collision investigations and one theft from a vehicle.

Aside from calls to the detachment, Whistler police also hit the Village Stroll for proactive patrols during the week. Those patrols included seven checks involving a total of 21 people who were caught using drugs in contravention of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

“During each of the checks, persons were arrested or detained, and had small quantities of drugs such as cocaine on their person,” police explained. “Because each person had no previous police contacts involving illegal drugs and each carried small quantities, all were released unconditionally.”

Of those individuals, 17 were Whistler locals while four were reportedly visiting from the Fraser Valley area.

Two more locals were also nabbed for using substances before getting behind the wheel. On Thursday, Dec. 29, a speed check resulted in an impaired driving investigation. Based off the driver’s breath samples, that investigation netted the driver an impounded vehicle and a 90-day license suspension

A second unrelated check also led to an impaired driving investigation, with the motorists' breath samples reading “WARN” this time rather than fail, the driver was served with a three-day driving suspension.
