Whistler working to help seniors age in place

UBCM grant to fund assessment and action plan

Whistler's seniors—like ski instructors George Tjelios-Nicholas (right) and Marcel Richoz, who were both featured in the recent documentary The Fit Generation—don't always fit the stereotype, but they still need help when it comes to aging in place. The Resort Municipality of Whistler is hoping to offer assistance through a new UBCM-funded project.

The Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) is launching a project this month that will help local seniors age in place.

Paid for with a $24,418 grant from the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM), the work includes an age-friendly assessment followed by the development of an action plan that will include recommendations for council’s consideration.

A multi-stakeholder working group will guide the process starting this month. Interested seniors and stakeholders can contact [email protected] for more info.

Broader community engagement will take place through a survey and “focused conversations,” according to the RMOW.

“We are grateful to UBCM for their support in moving Whistler towards being a more inclusive, age-friendly community,” said Councillor Jen Ford, in a release.

“What excites me most is the community discussions and the co-creation of an action plan that is truly place-based for Whistler’s seniors.”

The Age-friendly Action Plan is expected to come back to council by the end of the year.
