Whistler’s Mark Abma is the latest addition to the Whistler-Blackcomb Pro Team, an elite group of local skiers and snowboarders who represent the resort at competitions, in the media, and on the slopes.

Abma is a coach with the Blackcomb Freestyle Ski Club, with a growing reputation in new school park disciplines like slopestyle, big air and halfpipe. In the U.S. Open last year he was fourth in the Big Air and fifth in the slopestyle event. At home in Whistler, he won the Atomic Skier Pipe pro am contest last year to earn a berth in the World Skiing Invitational.

Abma’s park riding was also featured in a segment in the Poor Boyz film Ready, Fire, Aim last season.

"He has quickly proven that he deserves to be in the upper eschelon of professional skiing," said Mike Douglas, who is known as the "Godfather" of the new school progression.

Douglas is also a member of the Whistler-Blackcomb pro team along with two-time freeskiing world champions Hugo Harrison and Jenn Ashton, four-time X-Games gold medallist Aleisha Cline, and World Cup racer and Canadian champion Britt Janyk..

The snowboard team includes Shin Campos, Gaetan Chanut, Chris Dufficy, JF Pelchat, Maelle Ricker and Kevin Sansalone.

Abma spent his summer on the road fighting forest fires in the Interior before joining Matchstick Productions on an East Coast movie tour, and is excited to be back in Whistler with the Pro Team.

"I’ve lived in Whistler for quite a few years now," said the Langley native. "It’s my favourite place to be in the winter.

"I’m psyched to be on the Pro Team, and when I look at my fellow team members, it’s kind of unbelievable."
