Claire Benson, Holden Wilson strike bronze at BC Winter Games

The Whistler-area biathletes earned two of the first medals of the 2024 event

Two Whistler-based biathletes reached the podium on opening day of the Lhtako Quesnel 2024 BC Winter Games.

Claire Benson secured a bronze medal in the junior girls' competition in a time of 18 minutes and 44 seconds. Gold went to Skye Cadell (17:55.70) and Ella Broadworth did enough for silver (18:37.70).

Meanwhile, Holden Wilson finished third among junior boys (16:42.80). William Bertrand elevated himself to victory (16:12.60), and Wyatt Bot just edged out Wilson for the runner-up spot (16:42.10).

Despite earlier concerns that lack of snow would be an issue on Feb. 22, conditions proved acceptable for the cross-country skiing portion of the event. Target shooting took place at a new permanent biathlon range built specifically for the Games.

“We’re excited to kick off the competition at Hallis Lake and this first competition using their new permanent range,” said Brian Balkwill, president of the 2024 BC Winter Games, in a press release. “All of these athletes should be proud of themselves for getting here. I hope the community will join me in celebrating these athletes and taking in the competition throughout the Games!”

The 2024 BC Winter Games run until Feb. 25. Full results are available here.
