If the 21 st annual Cheakamus Challenge Fall Classic Mountain Bike race goes ahead as planned on Sept. 20, drivers can expect a few road closures and slow downs for the duration of the race.

There will be highway traffic delays on Squamish Valley Road and Government Road from about 9:50 a.m. to 10:10 a.m. for the start of the race.

From Godefrey’s Lookout on Highway 99, where it meets the Cheakamus Canyon, to the Brandywine Falls turnoff, there will be riders on the highway and traffic control in place from about 10:15 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Organizer Grant Lamont has also been co-ordinating the race with construction crews currently working on the highway.

If the event is pushed back to Sept. 27 due to the fire hazard, the same temporary closures and delays will apply.

Meanwhile, registration for the 2003 Cheakamus Challenge is already 80 riders ahead of where it was at this time last year, and Lamont is expecting a good turnout.

A number of pro riders have already signed up, including Test of Metal winner Andrew Kyle and NORBA champion Ryder Hesjedal. Lamont expects to have a better picture of who’s racing for cash in the men’s and women’s Elite categories in the next few weeks.

In addition Lamont is boosting the Cheakamus Challenge and WORCA year-end party at The Brewhouse on Saturday afternoon. Admission is still free, and the event will include entertainment, contests, and the annual presentation of Cheaky Awards to five Whistler riders who have made a contribution to the sport of mountain biking in Whistler.

You can register online for the Cheakamus Challenge at www.cheakamuschallenge.ca. Registration forms are also available at local bike shops, and a few spots will be held open for day of race registration starting at 8 a.m. at Squamish Airport. The race starts promptly at 10 a.m.
