Fundraiser for local speedway at Tapley’s

It seems only fitting that the Pemberton Stock Car Association should be raising money for their capital projects through a fundraising event.

After all, the Pemberton Speedway, the local racetrack managed by the PSCA, has been built on the backs of volunteer work and donations from local businesses from the outset.

Pat Archer, president of the association, said they probably have more than $200,000 worth of donations invested in the track.

"We’ve pretty well done everything with volunteers and very little cash flow," he said.

But they still have a little ways to go.

The track might be ready for the racers but the Speedway still needs some upgrades for their fans.

Specifically, they need to raise funds for the bleachers, the concession stand and the washrooms.

Archer said they’re looking to raise about $10,000.

The bleachers are the top priority right now. They are halfway constructed, with the basic framework done. The next step is getting the lumber so people have a place to sit.

Even without the bleachers however, Archer said close to 1,000 people were at the Speedway last September during the inaugural race weekend.

"They all sat on the rocks and enjoyed it immensely!" he said.

"It worked quite well for not having a whole lot there."

While it worked, the PSCA wants to improve the track for the 2004 season.

The first race of the summer is planned for June 26. Archer said six races are planned over the course of the summer.

In the meantime the fundraising has begun.

At Tapley’s Neighbourhood Pub on Saturday, May 8 at 5 p.m. there will be a fundraiser with some great prizes up for grabs.

There’s a $10 cover but that gets you a pint of beer.

Three race cars will be on display outside from 3 to 8 p.m.

Among the prizes is a chance to take the race car around the Pemberton Speedway for a few laps, as well as a golf package, a helicopter ride and an evening at a local hotel.

Tickets for the various prizes will be on sale at the event.
