Canada’s newest alpine skiing hero, after winning a silver medal at Lake Louise in November, is out for the rest of the season following a crash in downhill training.

According to reports, Erik Guay of Mont Tremblant was first out of the start for a downhill training run at Val Gardena, Italy on Wednesday when he crashed on a pitch. He was airlifted off the course and evaluated by team medical staff who determined that he had torn ligarments in his left knee.

As of press time, the doctors were working on getting Guay back to Canada for treatment, including the possibility of knee surgery. Guay, 22, could miss the rest of the 2003-04 season.
